Warner Music swung to a loss on the recording company’s failed acquisition of Bulldog Entertainment, but revenue rose thanks in part to the year’s top-selling album, Josh Groban’s “Noel.” Amazingly, they didn’t blame illegal downloads. Josh Grobans vocals are still brilliant. The singer whose voice has already conquered the whole world Josh Groban never ceases to surprise the audiences with his masterpieces of a genre balancing between classical and pop music. Mary J. Blige has put an end to Josh Groban’s reign on The Billboard 200 as the R&B singer’s “Growing Pains” moves up 2-1. The Geffen release sold 204,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen Soundscan, a 68% drop-off in sales. Groban’s “Noel,” which had been No. 1 for five weeks, slips 1-3 with 178,000 units, a 77% sales hit. Total album sales plunged 15 percent in 2007, and retailers waited until October for the year’s top release, California tenor Josh Groban’s holiday-themed “Noel,” according to sales data issued on Thursday by industry tracker Nielsen SoundScan. Mary J. Blige must be especially happy that the holidays are over. Her latest album “Growing Pains” sold 629,000 copies in its first week, but failed to hit No. 1 due to the juggernaut that was Josh Groban’s “Noel.” That all changed this week, when “Noel” slid to No. 3 and “Growing Pains” moved up to the top of the Billboard 200. Mary J. Blige’s Growing Pains knocks Josh Groban’s Noel out of the number one spot on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart. Josh Groban’s Noel spends a fifth week on top of the Billboard Top 200 album chart. Josh Groban’s “Noel” (143/Reprise) this week becomes the first Christmas album to top The Billboard 200 for five straight weeks, after moving 757,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Nailing the first position on the Billboard Top Ten for the fourth consecutive weeks, Groban’s Christmas album has become the best selling album of 2007.
